Background

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Guided by the Quaker belief in the divine light of each person, AFSC works with communities and partners worldwide to challenge unjust systems and promote lasting peace. AFSC has more than 100 years of experience building peace in communities worldwide and works in the following ways: bridging and convening, community organizing and civil society strengthening, advocacy, research, and analysis. It seeks to change situations and systems that lead to violence. Much of AFSC’s work includes support to dialogue and capacity building opportunities led by the affected communities.

About the Somalia Program

AFSC believes that young people can positively transform the prevailing context of violent conflicts in Somalia into more secure, productive, and just places. Consequently, AFSC is implementing a peace-building program and safe migration in Somalia targeting the youth, to empower them with peacebuilding, trauma healing, reconciliation, leadership, advocacy skills and safe Migration. Somalia’s target areas include Mogadishu, Kismayu, Bossaso, Dhobley, and Dadaab Refugee Complex in Kenya that host about 95% of the refugees of Somali origin.

About South Sudan Program

AFSC is implementing a five-year trauma healing program in South Sudan and Ethiopia to enhance peacebuilding and trauma healing among peacebuilders. The program targets a diverse range of peacebuilders, including CBOs, FBOs, youth, women, and people with disabilities. By providing trauma healing services like counselling and group therapy, training on approaches like AVP and HROC, the program aims to equip peacebuilders with the tools to address their own trauma and support community healing. Furthermore, the program advocates for trauma-informed policies at local and national levels, collaborates with local leaders and institutions, and strengthens the understanding of transitional justice among CSOs and faith leaders to foster sustainable peace in South Sudan and Ethiopia. The target areas in South Sudan include, Mundri, Jur River and Mvolo locations.

Objectives of the Consultancy:

"Marketing peace" is a relatively new concept that leverages marketing principles to promote peace and resolve conflicts. To support marketing of peace the organization is looking for a consultant who can use marketing strategies, similar to those used for products or services, to spread awareness about peace, foster positive attitudes, and encourage behaviours that support peace. The training should clearly articulate the principles of peace marketing, its objectives and provide applicable marketing tools and strategies in Somalia and South Sudan.

AFSC would like to conduct a four-day peace marketing training for six partners staff from Somalia, two partners staff from South Sudan and AFSC program and Finance staff who provide Support and accompaniment of the implementing partners in the two Countries.

Specific objectives.

  • The Consultant(s) is expected to develop and execute a 4-day training workshop on Marketing Peace for twenty-three (23) participants consisting of AFSC staff and partner staff.
  • To develop effective training materials/tools for participants during the training and a package of training materials (handouts) for future references.

Responsibilities and Deliverables

Responsibilities

  • To design and deliver a comprehensive four-day training for the Somalia and South Sudan program teams
  • Engage participants in simulating relevant and realistic challenges for practicing and applying the skills learnt.
  • Encourage participants to fully contribute; brief presentations, live demonstrations, interactive practical exercises with feedback, coaching on the relevant skills and processes and discussion exercises.
  • Support the participants practical delivery of peace marketing strategies using the available tools in their countries after the training
  • Provide participants with set of reference materials that should include guidelines for practical exercises/handouts/tools, an annex with a standard power point presentation, inclusive of notes for each slide and a participants’ Resource Package.

Deliverables

The consultant is liable for the following deliverables during the contract period.

  • Submit an outcome Training report
  • Provide a package of reference materials for the participants
  • Relevant tools and documents that can strengthen the staff skills to effectively market peace.

Timeline and framework

The assignment is expected to start by 16th June 2025 and conclude by 5th July 2025 with Final deliverables and full payment of the consultant

Consultants Qualifications and expertise

The consultants are expected to possess the following qualifications:

  • At least Five years of experience in marketing
  • A clear understanding of the peace building contexts in Somalia and South Sudan
  • Excellent facilitation skills
  • Experience working with I/NGOs on peace marketing
