Description
The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons, that they may heal, learn, and determine their own future. Founded in November 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus, JRS was officially registered on 19 March 2000 in Vatican City as a foundation.
JRS is present in over 56 countries worldwide, providing services to more than 811,884 individuals. The work is overseen by 10 regional offices with support from the International Office in Rome. In Kenya, JRS has two projects: an urban refugee project in Nairobi focusing on Education and Livelihoods and field project in Kakuma Refugee Camp focusing on Education, Integrated psychosocial inclusive Education programme in Centres and Safe Shelters.
Operational Context/Role
This is a position based in Kakuma Refugee Camp. The holder will be under the direct supervision of the JRS Protection Coordinator and will take responsibility for managing the operation of the JRS safe shelters. She will be actively involved in planning, monitoring, implementation and evaluation of the Safe shelter activities and takes responsibility and attention to individual beneficiaries’ concerns.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Work closely with the JRS Safe Shelter Coordinator and the Supervisor on managing the daily operation of the Safe Haven and ensure that clients’ needs are met
- Ensure safety of clients and to immediately report safety violations to security forces and Safe Shelter Coordinator
- Offer caring presence to the boys who reside in Safe shelters
- Attend to individual needs of each client and organize group activities
- Ensure proper supervision and monitoring of the Safe shelter during night hours and day hours depending on duty
- keep records and ensure confidentiality of all work carried out in the program including ensuring that admission and discharge forms are collected and filed before a client is admitted or released by referring agencies, maintaining client files and writing daily handover reports
- Liaise with referring agencies, following up of the client’s cases, recording and reporting visits of referring agencies to beneficiaries and attend SGBV and other inter-agency meetings as required
- Attend weekly Supervisors’ meetings for reporting and communication when requested
- Assist in preparing and submitting weekly, monthly, mid-year and annual reports and other reports related to Safe Haven as required
- Ensuring cleanliness of the residence and allocating duties to the beneficiaries with specific emphasis on hygiene among the safe haven resident.
- Keep clients’ records and ensure confidentiality of all work carried out including writing regular case updates for each client and recording daily handover reports
- Assess the medical needs of clients, ensure timely medical attention in cases of medical emergencies and inform other Safe Shelter Matron and the Supervisor about any medical issues that should be followed up and facilitate access to medical care for Safe Shelter clients in the company of security officers.
- Provide individual and group psychosocial support to the residents and recommend counselling cases to the Safe Shelter counsellor.
- Conduct conflict management and resolution among clients as needed and report when cases are unresolved and need attention of Safe Shelters Manager
- To carry out other duties that may be assigned by the Safe Shelters Manager.
Person Specification – Essential Requirements
(E) Qualification
- Diploma/certificate qualification in a related field e.g. Psychology/counselling, nursing, aid, teaching, social work, gender, art/play therapy, community development, child protection or related field and at least two years practical working experience preferably in a hospital, safe shelters, or school.
- Must be a male.
- Experience as a nurse-aid will be an added advantage
- Proven experience in managing people/teams.
- Experience in working in the field of SGBV, women empowerment and child protection
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized and vulnerable communities and ability to work in an environment of relief emergency operation
- Strong and practical skills in peace building and conflict resolution
- Good knowledge of MS word/Office.
- Excellent oral and written Kiswahili and English. Knowledge of another language in the camp such as French and local language will be an added advantage.
- Ability to build effective partnership and collaborate with other team members.
- Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable and refugee population of different ethnic background.

Salary Level
- This position is graded at job Group 3 level 4.
- KES 55,280 Net per month.
