Mission

In situations of armed conflict, Geneva Call, as a neutral, impartial and independent international humanitarian organisation, endeavors to strengthen the respect of humanitarian norms and principles by armed non-State actors and de facto authorities, in order to improve the protection of civilians. Appel de Genève/Geneva Call is a private, not-for-profit, humanitarian organisation foundation under Swiss law, founded in 2000.

Role

The Director Funding and Services manages all technical functions and administrative support units at Geneva Call. He/She reports directly to the Director General. All heads of units of the department report to the Director of External Relations and Support Services as well as those technical functional leads in field offices. The functional areas include: Human Resources, Finance, Budget, Information Technology, Donor Relations, Travel, Procurement, Facility Management and Administration. Reference to Director of Operations, and/or Senior Leadership Team.

  • Provide strategic leadership to all support services and functional units, aligning operational goals with Geneva Call’s broader organisational objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Director General and senior leadership to develop and implement organisational policies, procedures, and long-term strategic plans.
  • Ensure integration of services across departments, fostering collaboration between headquarters and field offices.

Functional and Technical Management:

  • Oversee the People management, ensuring effective workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, staff development and retention, duty of care.
  • Lead the Finance and Budget units to ensure sound financial management, budgeting, and reporting in compliance with Geneva Call’s policies, donor requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Supervise Information Technology services, ensuring the organisation’s digital infrastructure supports operational needs and innovations keep pace with developments in the sector to ensure relevance and security.
  • Lead the Donor Relations team, ensuring effective fundraising efforts are aligned with the programmatic objectives and budgetary plans, engaging, communicating and sustaining Geneva Call’s donor community and growing the donor base in line with budgetary demands.
  • Lead the HR unit, ensuring that the functional deliverables are aligned with Geneva Call’s strategy.

Administrative and Support Services:

  • Travel and Procurement unit: ensuring compliance with policies, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency in full transparency and in line with industry best practices as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure optimal Building Management and Administration, including office facilities and security, to create a functional and safe working environment for all staff.
  • Ensure the effective implementation and administration of support services in field offices by providing guidance and oversight to local leads.

Operational Oversight and Performance Monitoring:

  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators for each functional area, ensuring the continuous improvement of service delivery.
  • Provide regular reports to the Director General on performance, risks, and resource needs.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, external regulations, and donor requirements across all managed units.
  • Legally accountable; signature of public documents and financial statements; registered as signatory at the commercial register.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Directly supervise heads of units within the department, offering leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement across all support services.
  • Act as a key liaison between headquarters and field office functional leads, ensuring alignment in service delivery and standards.

Main qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Education: Qualification in Finance is required. A master’s in business administration may be considered in place of a professional finance qualification.
  • Experience: At least 15 years of progressive experience in managing multi-functional teams, including Human Resources, Finance, Administration, and Donor Relations, Information technology, preferably in an international humanitarian context and with experience in the private sector. Had a senior leadership role in a growing organisation; has managed teams for a minimum of 6 years and with a minimum of 4 direct reports. Has worked in HQ and in the field.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and people management skills with a proven ability to oversee diverse operational areas.
  • Solid understanding and direct hands-on experience of financial management, budget planning, human resources and donor relations.
  • Proven knowledge of humanitarian funding practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across various departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Public speaking skills to large groups and senior level officials across a variety of cultures and contexts.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and experience in managing complex projects and operations. Advanced project management skills required.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing environments.
  • Ability to travel to field locations in complex and conflict locations (up to 30%).
