The COO/DMD will support the Managing Director (MD) in providing overall strategic leadership and driving execution to achieve BUBL’s sustainable growth. This role oversees Banking Operations, Information Technology, Procurement, Compliance & Anti-Money Laundering, and Marketing & Communications, ensuring that all functions operate efficiently and effectively in alignment with the institution’s financial and social objectives.

Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate closely with the MD to shape and implement the overarching business strategy, ensuring alignment with both short-term and long-term goals.

  • Assist in formulating comprehensive business plans and executing Board directives to foster institutional growth and sustainability.

    Governance and Vision Alignment

  • Provide robust leadership by establishing sustainable financial and social objectives that reflect the organization’s Mission and Vision, ensuring a focused pathway toward success.

  • Drive the development of a strong governance framework that promotes accountability and transparency throughout the organization.

    Relationship Management

  • Cultivate and manage strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance the organization’s brand and expand its network and partnerships, ultimately enhancing collaboration and mutual success.

    Organizational Culture and Values

  • Champion the establishment and maintenance of a positive organizational culture that embodies core values and effective practices, fostering an engaged and high-performing management team with clear succession planning.

    Financial Planning and Oversight

  • Oversee the strategic preparation of organizational plans and budgets, ensuring they are closely aligned with the strategic objectives and priorities of the organization.

  • Direct departmental executives to ensure that operational activities are consistent with the organization’s policies, promoting efficiency and effectiveness.

    Operational Excellence

  • Spearhead the implementation of operational programs that align with and support the organization’s strategic goals, ensuring cohesive efforts across all levels.

  • Develop and maintain robust structures and processes that support both current operational needs and anticipated future growth.

    Risk Management

  • Continuously evaluate business and operational risks, craft innovative strategies for risk mitigation, and ensure resilience against potential losses.

  • Define and communicate responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities for all direct reports, ensuring clarity and alignment with the organization’s objectives.

    Compliance and Improvement

  • Ensure full compliance with legal and regulatory requirements across all organizational activities, fostering a culture of integrity and responsibility.

  • Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing operational systems organization-wide, driving a culture of continuous improvement while fostering innovation and creativity.

    Additional Duties

  • Execute any additional responsibilities assigned by MD, or the Board, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to organizational success.

Safeguarding:

  • Establish a safeguarding culture across all levels of the programme by implementing the safeguarding policy. Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment.
  • Responsible for ensuring team members are appropriately trained, supported and have access to resources regarding issues that are identified and implemented following the safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Identify the nature of the incident and report according to the safeguarding reporting procedure, and encourage the staff to report accordingly.

Educational & Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of a first or undergraduate degree in any discipline from an accredited institution and attainment of a professional qualification in any business-related discipline shall an added advantage.
  • Prerequisite post-graduate experience, and significant working experience of at least 05 years at executive management, evidence of experience in several areas of banking operations, including business development, credit, finance, risk management, audit or treasury management.

    Business Management and Negotiation Skills:

  • Proven track record in business management and successful negotiations, driving client retention and profitability.

    Managing and Motivating a Large Staff:

  • Experienced in leading large teams, fostering collaboration, and implementing programs that boost productivity and morale.

    Communication and Training Skills:

  • Skilled communicator and trainer, adept at delivering clear messages and training programs to enhance team performance.

    Technical Report Writing and Computer Literacy:

  • Proficient in technical report writing and advanced computer skills, including Excel and Power BI, to analyze and present data.

    Adaptability to Challenging Environments:

  • Able to adapt to challenging environments and thrive in diverse, resource-limited settings while managing complex projects.

    Fluency in English and Local Languages in Uganda:

  • Fluent in English and [local language(s)], ensuring effective communication with both local communities and international stakeholders.
