Biomedical Services Manager Summary Description
Plans, supports, and oversees Mercy Ships’ biomedical services. Sets the strategic direction for the department and provides leadership for the biomedical teams.
Responsible for staffing, and for ensuring equipment and resources are in places. Ensures the highest standards of clinical practice are upheld. Develops policies and procedures as needed. Provides centralized clinical and operational support for biomedical services to the hospitals and international programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Clinical:
- Support the execution of hospital, programmatic, and organizational objectives in a systematic and structured way.
- Develops applicable training and resources for biomedical equipment users to ensure correct and safe operations of all equipment and devices.
- Develop policies and procedures as needed and ensure documents are current, comprehensive, and effective.
- Provide clinical and operational support to both the AFM and GLM Hospitals.
- Create a departmental plan to ensure hospital objectives are met.
- Utilize monitoring tools to track and report on the performance of the service line. Create tools if none exist.
- Regularly identify growth initiatives, advocate for best practices and integrate them into a continuous improvement plan.
- Provide input for the annual budget of Direct Medical Services. Ensures adherence to approved budgets.
- Act as the biomedical services subject matter expert for:
- Clinical matters related to quality, safety, clinical performance and effectiveness (clinical governance)
- Project work (e.g., electronic health record development, annual maintenance periods, new ship build, etc.
- Equipment donation review team (EDRT)
Staffing:
- Review applicants for Biomedical Team position qualifications (credentialing).
- Document needed positions in the staffing formation for each vessel.
- Select candidates to fill staffing plans.
- Assist with the development of recruitment strategy for Biomedical Team positions.
- Attend industry conferences as appropriate.
- Provide remote or onboard training for team members as needed.
Equipment and Resource Management:
- Provide clinical and technical perspective related to biomedical equipment procurement
- Liaise with vendors to ensure optimal use of equipment.
- Coordinate with procurement, supply, and clinical teams to ensure required resources are available for the hospitals.

- May require occasional travel to the International Support Center and to the vessels.
Education and Experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the education and/or experience required.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, electronics or related field.
- Five years of experience at Biomedical Equipment Technician II or above.
- Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) certified.
- Management experience preferred.
- Mercy Ships vessel experience preferred.
