ILGA World is seeking a senior-level IT & technology management consultant to provide expert strategic and technical support across its global digital infrastructure.

This remote consultancy will support the organisation’s growing need for secure, inclusive, and sustainable technology solutions in the context of human rights advocacy.

The consultant will work directly with key staff, including the Operations Manager and Logistics Officer, and collaborate with the Fundraising and MEL Manager on advanced digital security initiatives.

Building on significant recent investments in digital hygiene, cloud systems, and cybersecurity—including Microsoft 365, 1Password, Cloudflare, and Asana—the consultant will lead and advise on IT governance, secure technology use, infrastructure development, and capacity building.

They will also provide high-level one-on-one technical support tailored to a globally distributed team with varying technical skills and digital access.

This role requires an autonomous, solutions-driven professional who can conduct systems audits, strengthen risk and resilience strategies, and guide the implementation of IT tools and practices aligned with international standards.

The ideal candidate will be committed to ILGA World’s mission, possess a deep understanding of digital security in human rights contexts, and bring an inclusive, collaborative approach to strengthening IT systems that serve a diverse global movement.

Background: IT, technology and digital security at ILGA World

As an independent senior-level consultant, you will collaborate closely with ILGA World’s leadership and staff to provide expert-level strategic and technical support across the organisation’s digital infrastructure and IT systems.

This consultancy requires a hands-on, solutions-oriented professional who can operate autonomously, while also supporting the day-to-day digital needs of a global team.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic implementation of IT governance

Lead the execution and continuous improvement of ILGA World’s Information Technology and Security Policy, ensuring compliance with international standards and adapting policies to a global human rights organisation’s context.

  • Advisory on secure and inclusive technology use

Advise the Secretariat on secure digital practices, privacy compliance, risk mitigation, and the implementation of sustainable technology that supports a distributed and diverse workforce.

  • Audit and optimisation of digital ecosystemsConduct strategic assessments of digital platforms, cloud infrastructure, and communication systems. Propose and implement enhancements to improve performance, security, and accessibility.
  • Risk management and resilience planning

Strengthen IT security, data protection, and disaster recovery protocols to safeguard organisational operations and sensitive information, with special attention to human rights risk environments.

  • IT procurement and vendor management

Lead the evaluation, selection, and integration of IT tools and services. Ensure that solutions are cost-effective, secure, and suited to ILGA World’s operational needs and values.

  • Capacity building and change management

Design and deliver training sessions, documentation, and onboarding materials to strengthen internal IT capacity and support organisational adoption of new tools and practices.

  • Direct one-on-one technical support

Provide personalised, high-level technical support to ILGA World staff, board members, and consultants. Offer timely troubleshooting, onboarding, and guidance tailored to varying levels of digital literacy and access.

  • Strategic infrastructure development

Identify and recommend scalable, future-oriented infrastructure improvements. Ensure systems are inclusive, secure, and resilient-particularly for users based in the Global South or operating in low-resource settings.

Performance of duties, remuneration, and benefits

  • This is a remote consultancy
  • The remuneration for the 6-month consultancy is 7,800 CHF
  • ILGA World does not specify the number of hours for this consultancy, but does expect the availability of the consultant to provide needed one-on-one support, as confirmed by the Operations manager.

Requirements

Educational and professional background

  • A degree in information technology, computer science, business, communications, or a related field.
  • Graduate-level education or equivalent senior-level consulting experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in IT management, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure consulting—ideally in NGO, nonprofit, or international federation contexts.

Certifications

  • Relevant certifications in IT and digital security are highly desirable, such as:
    • CompTIA Security+, CISSP, CISM, or equivalent
    • ITIL Foundation, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, or Google Workspace Administrator
  • GDPR or ISO 27001 implementation knowledge or credentials
  • PMP or PRINCE2 (project management certifications) are an asset

Technical expertise

  • Strong command of cloud-based services and platforms, including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and encrypted storage solutions.
  • Proficiency in macOS and Windows environments, SharePoint, VPNs, and digital hygiene tools.
  • Familiarity with IT procurement, digital security software, and data backup systems.
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting for remote teams with varying technical capacities across multiple regions.

Policy and governance

  • Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining IT and security policies aligned with international standards such as GDPR and ISO 27001.
  • Ability to assess and optimize digital systems, IT governance frameworks, and disaster recovery protocols.

Communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in other UN languages is a strong asset.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users, including senior leadership and consultants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a customer-service-oriented approach to problem solving.

Values and cultural competence

  • Strong commitment to human rights and ILGA World’s mission of advancing LGBTI equality globally.
  • Demonstrated multicultural sensitivity and the ability to work with a diverse global team.
  • Experience working with or within LGBTI communities or social justice organisations is a significant advantage.
