Purpose
This role sits within the HQ management team and will be responsible for managing a U.S. and international portfolio of current and prospective major donors, cultivating relationships with individuals, trusts, and corporations and soliciting major gifts and stewarding donors effectively to encourage their lasting support.
The role will also focus on developing and implementing a grassroots fundraising strategy – which will include giving campaigns and the establishment of a general fund or endowment – to ensure RET’s financial stability for the years to come.
This is a one-year contract, renewable based on performance.
Reports To
The Director of Development reports to the VP of Business Development.
Location
This role is fully remote but expected to be based in the United States.
Candidates will work in tandem with HQ in Geneva, as well as liaise with regional bureaus in Panama and Türkiye. On occasion, travel to these offices or meetings with donors may be required.
All candidates should have the legal right to work in the US, a valid passport, have a flexible schedule, and be physically able to travel.
Responsibilities
Fundraising and portfolio management:
- Manage U.S. and international (current and prospective) major donors.
- Research and cultivate relationships with individuals, trusts, and corporations to solicit major gifts, as well as effectively steward donors through the giving process and encourage recurring gifts.
- In partnership with the Global Communications Officer and the Partnerships and Support Services Officer, design and implement a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy focused on grassroots donations from the US and Canada, aligned with RET’s development goals.
- Meet a yearly set of agreed fundraising KPIs (including restricted and unrestricted funds raised, asks made, meetings secured, and gift close rate).
- Deliver major gifts from HNWIs, philanthropists, corporations, and foundations in support of RET’s strategic priorities (to be defined in the development phase), with a particular focus on the U.S. and Canada, Europe, and the Middle East.
- Coordinate with Global Communications Officer to develop external communications products for resource mobilization and fundraising activities.
- Deploy and efficiently use a CRM to record and report on activity: feeding into campaign data, team reporting and management information for the senior leadership team.
Management and capacity building:
- Build the capacity of- and align the messaging of HQ, regional, and relevant country staff in resource mobilization and fundraising efforts.
- Externally, provide excellent stewardship of major and grassroots donors, ensuring that their gifts have maximum impact, keeping them informed of developments, and providing a consistent point of contact between them and RET to encourage recurring gifts.
- Internally, ensure timely reporting of gifts, provide regular updates on campaigns and major gift leads, and provide concrete steps for achieving established goals and KPIs.
- Coordinate country-level efforts with the Global Communications Officer, country communications officers, and country focal points, when appropriate.
Collaboration:
- Work in partnership with the Finance, Communications, and Senior Management teams to ensure gifts are processed in line with donor wishes and financial regulations according to their country of taxation.
- Work with leadership to identify funding priorities and connect them with relevant potential funding prospects or develop fundraising campaigns.
- Work with Senior Management/HQ to secure transformational gifts.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- 7–10 years in resource mobilization and fundraising for major international, nonprofit organizations
- Demonstrable experience of devising successful resource mobilization and fundraising strategies
- Extensive fundraising experience at a major gift level, developing relationships and personally securing significant gifts (USD 500K and above)
- Experience working for a nonprofit, NGO, or other international organization that liaises with governments and multilateral agencies
- Experience in or extensive knowledge of the humanitarian sector, including the triple nexus approach, the Sustainable Development Goals, and current geopolitics and trends
- Proven experience developing grassroots donations campaigns and databases
- Availability to work with teams across time zones, as RET’s HQ is based in Geneva, and this position may liaise with regional offices in Panama and Türkiye
- Excellent knowledge of best practices in philanthropic fundraising, including some knowledge of tax regulations and benefits for gifts in the US
- Demonstrable experience building, tracking, and monitoring leads and gifts, as well as building and maintaining a database and implementing and maintaining a CRM platform
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work in a multicultural, multi-lingual environment
- Fluency in English (excellent writing skills)
Desirable
- Experience working for an INGO or other humanitarian or development organization
- Experience in project management
- Previous experience working with teams across countries and time zones
- Fluency in Arabic, French, and/or Spanish is an advantage
