Introduction
The Madrasa Early Childhood Programme (MECP), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), was established in Kenya in the 1982. Today, MECP has grown and is locally registered in Kenya, Uganda, and Zanzibar. Founded to support underprivileged communities establish and manage high quality preschools, MECP has evolved to deliver government accredited professional development courses for both new and practicing preschool teachers and provide technical support to governments, international development partners, private organisations, and CSO.
MECP’s four government registered Teacher Training Institutes deliver government accredited Diploma courses. To meet evolving policy requirements, teacher needs, and incorporate the latest research and evidence, MECP reviewed and adapted the Diploma course.
Background to the Assignment
Over the last two years, MECP core technical team from across the region has conducted a comprehensive needs assessment, reviewed the curriculum, and updated to ensure the content remains relevant, compliant, and of the highest quality. The process incorporated best practices from MECP’s content and experiences and the latest research on ECD and teacher training. The revised curriculum has also been developed with flexibility in mind, allowing for modular delivery and blended learning approaches.
As a requirement across the three countries, the new curriculum must be vetted and accredited by national accreditation bodies before it can be fully implemented. Before submitting, MECP is seeking the services of a professional copy editor to review the Diploma curriculum and materials.
Overall objective and scope of work
The overall objective of this consultancy is to deliver a high quality, consistent copy edited MECP Diploma Course Curriculum and Materials
Scope of the assignment
The Consultant will:
- Proofread and edit the following curriculum documents for gramme, consistency, clarity formatting:
- Curriculum Framework – 62 pages
- Tutor Curriculum Guide – 210 pages
- MECP Core Competency Areas and MECP Learning Modules – 10 pages
- MECP Core Competency Areas Alignment with MECP Modules, Units, and Learning Outcomes – 9 pages Total pages – 291
- Develop a three-page easy to read summary of the curriculum for external audiences.
- Share the copyedited documents to the supervising and oversight team for review.
- Incorporate feedback and finalise all documents.
Key Deliverables / Expected Outputs
The following are the expected deliverables:

Timeframe
The task will be completed by 30th June 2025
Supervision and oversight
The Consultant will work directly and report AKF Regional ECD Advisor, East Africa. In addition, the consultant will engage other team members as directed by the Regional ECD Advisor.
Budget
The proposed budget should include the professional fees of the Consultant inclusive of all taxes and license fees.
Skills and Experience
- Proven Professional Experience (10+ years): Substantial experience in copy editing complex, technical documents, particularly in the field of education, teacher training, or curriculum development within international or cross-cultural contexts.
- Experience with Education and Curriculum Materials: Demonstrated ability to edit educational content, including curriculum frameworks, facilitator guides, training manuals, and instructional modules—especially in early childhood education (ECE) or teacher training.
- Proven experience editing for Multinational Audiences: Experience editing content that will be reviewed by multiple national stakeholders, ensuring language is clear, culturally sensitive, and universally understandable.
- Work with Media Agencies, International Organizations, NGOs an asset.
Ethical Standards and Safeguarding
The selected Copy Editor must adhere to AKF’s Safeguarding Manual, and all team members of the Consultant team must sign AKF’s Safeguarding Statement of Commitment upon contracting.

- Develop a technical proposal (not more than four pages) outlining understanding of the TOR and demonstrating how you intend to deliver this assignment.
- Budget, inclusive of all costs. (NB – AKF is not tax exempt. All relevant taxes must be included)
- A minimum of two examples of similar work.
- CV of all key proposed team members (max. 2 pages per CV)
- Include three references from similar assignments previously undertaken.
