The OMCT works with around 200 member organisations which constitute its SOS-Torture Network, to end torture, fight impunity and protect human rights defenders worldwide. Together, we make up the largest global group actively standing up to torture in more than 75 countries. Helping local voices be heard, we support our vital partners in the field and provide direct assistance to victims. Our international secretariat is based in Geneva, with offices in Brussels and Tunis.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Embedded in the Afghanistan project, as part of the Asia Desk, and under the supervision of the Human Rights Coordinator for Afghanistan, the Human Rights Officer is primarily responsible to support the implementation of the project, which aims to strengthen the resilience of Afghan HRDs through creating new pathways of human rights work inside Afghanistan.
Key responsibilities of the position include:
Implementation
- In close cooperation with OMCT`s projects partners, develop and run a data collection tool for continuous context analysis and mapping of Afghan HRDs and human rights violations to identify trends of the current situation inside Afghanistan.
- Develop a quarterly review of the mapping documents and analyse the situation to identify patterns and trends.
- Support implementation of the Anti-Torture Index and SOS defenders project in relation to Afghanistan
- Draft and edit social medias releases, reports, and other communication and information materials related to the project.
- Accompany Afghan led initiatives to strengthen human rights defenders to promote civic space and fight torture .
- Support the development of a country specific advocacy strategy towards UN, EU, ICC, ICJ and other stakeholders, organise advocacy missions, develop statements, comment related UN resolutions and analyse pattern and trends.
- Support the development of in-person workshops, establish supporting networks, peer-to peer initiatives, shelters and other related ideas related to psycho-social support of HRDs and victims of torture.
- Administer and accompany grants to partners.
External Relations, including with partners and donors
- Represent the OMCT`s Afghanistan project.
- Attend meetings, and forums, particularly with regards to UN, EU, ICC, ICJ advocacy and accompany related advocacy missions.
Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
- Support monitoring, reporting and evaluation activities, sharing outcomes, learnings and commitment of next steps.
- Draft activity reports on all implemented activities and contribute to donor reports in collaboration with OMCT’s Development programme.
- Contribute to /support the drafting of project proposals and fundraising activities.
Programme Collaboration
- Demonstrate ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of open communication and shared goals.
- Play a key role in driving successful programme outcomes through active participation, idea-sharing, and constructive feedback within collaborative initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- University degree in law, international relations, political or social sciences, management or related field, a post graduate degree being an asset.
- At least one year of practical experience in international human rights work, including through internships. Previous work on human rights defenders, civic space and anti-torture standards is an asset.
- Experience in working on the human rights situation in Afghanistan is not an excluding criterion, but constitutes a very strong asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of international human rights law, human rights NGOs, UN procedures, EU institutions and regional mechanisms for the protection of human rights.
- Excellent oral and written drafting and communication skills in English are an essential requirement. Being able to communicate in Dari language is a definite advantage.
- Excellent research skills with a proven ability to synthesize and condense large amounts of information into succinct formats.
- Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities.
- Ability to adapt to multidisciplinary work in the environment of a multicultural team and to engage with Afghan and other partners
- Ability to take initiatives and prioritize.

WHAT WE OFFER
OMCT is an equal opportunities employer. The range for the annual gross salary for this post is between 63’600 and 72’000 CHF, with a minimum of 25 days holidays, usual social benefits, and the possibility for part-time working from home, as well as 5 days of paid leave for professional development.
